Mathematics

There are many math curriculum options. How do we select just one? How do we know what will work the best? Below we give an overview of Math-U-See and how it fits with project-based learning. Learn more about each level  using the links at the bottom of the page. Take the placement test to find out which level is the best fit for your student(s).

Math-U-See

At Portals, we are designing around a literature (Read and Think) and project-based (Do) curriculum.  All subjects are better when we use not just our ears, but our experiences! Each individual student will learn at different paces and should be placed based on individual skill level as they begin the Portals program.

There are existing and established traditional math curriculum options that have a track record for better test scores that lean on text only, (Saxon or Abeka for instance), but they fall short in hands on processing.  We encourage educators to use whatever works for their students, and try different options until you find the best, but we think a year with Math-U-See will be hard to beat.

Math-U-See does 'hands-on' better than anyone. Each level includes integrated manipulatives that allow learners to see what they are calculating. This allows learners to understand the concept on top of just memorizing tables.  You can identify the correct placement level using the Math-U-See placement tools. Once you have completed the placement process with your student(s), you can customize your lesson plans to receive digital resources such as math lessons, supplemental links, and project ideas that correspond with the correct math level.

Your Math-U-See kit should include teacher guides, learner text, testing booklet, and any manipulatives for that level.  If you purchase your materials through the Portals Book Order, you will have the option to select which level of Math-U-See materials you need.
